One of the first things an examiner will do is test your eyesite very simply.

"The law requires that a licence holder or applicant is considered as suffering a prescribed disability if unable to meet the eyesight requirements, i.e. to read in good light (with the aid of glasses or contact lenses if worn) a registration mark fixed to a motor vehicle and containing letters and figures 79 millimetres high and 50 millimetres wide (i.e. post 1.9.2001 font) at a distance of 20 metres, or at a distance of 20.5 metres where the characters are 79 millimetres high and 57 millimetres wide (i.e. pre 1.9.2001 font). If unable to meet this standard, the driver must not drive and the licence must be refused or revoked."

In a nutshell, you need to be able to read a standard vehicle licence plate from 20m.

As you are considering starting driving lessons it would be a great idea to have an eye examination before you start. It's allways a good idea to have your eyes checked every two years anyway, as apart from correcting your vision if needed, it can also detect underlying health problems.

If you do need, or allready have glasses, contact lenses or a monacle! you'll need to wear these whenever you drive.

On your provisional driving licence application form you'll need to state if you've had any corrective eye surgery.

If you are color blind, please let me know so we can make sure we cover the color coded aspects of driving i.e. traffic lights.
